## Patreon CEO Slams AI Fair Use Claims, Demands Creator Compensation
Patreon CEO Jack Conte has strongly denounced the “fair use” argument frequently invoked by AI companies, labeling it “bogus” and asserting that creators whose works are used to train these models must be compensated.
Conte’s remarks highlight a growing tension between generative AI developers and the creative community. He argues that the use of vast datasets, often scraped from the internet without explicit permission or payment, directly undermines the livelihoods of artists, writers, musicians, and other creators.
The Patreon chief emphasized that while fair use has legitimate applications, its extension to wholesale data ingestion for commercial AI training constitutes exploitation, not incidental use. His stance aligns with numerous artists and industry groups who are calling for new licensing frameworks and revenue sharing models to ensure creators are recognized and fairly paid for their contributions to the AI revolution.
