## Attorneys General Warn OpenAI: Harm to Children “Will Not Be Tolerated”
A bipartisan coalition of state attorneys general has issued a stern warning to OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, asserting that any harm to children resulting from its artificial intelligence platforms “will not be tolerated.” The group of AGs has expressed serious concerns regarding the potential negative impacts of generative AI on minors.
In a letter addressed to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the attorneys general highlighted various risks, including the potential for AI models to expose children to inappropriate content, facilitate cyberbullying, collect sensitive personal data without consent, and exacerbate mental health issues. They emphasized the need for AI companies to prioritize child safety in the design, development, and deployment of their technologies.
The warning underscores the growing regulatory scrutiny faced by AI developers as their products become more pervasive. The attorneys general are urging OpenAI and other AI companies to implement robust safeguards, age-appropriate design features, and transparent data privacy practices to protect young users, making it clear that accountability for children’s well-being is paramount.
