**EU Launches Probe into Meta’s WhatsApp AI Chatbot Ban**

The European Union has opened an investigation into Meta over a recent policy change on WhatsApp that restricts rival AI chatbots from operating on the platform. The move is raising concerns about potential anti-competitive practices and a possible violation of the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Brussels is scrutinizing whether Meta’s decision to ban third-party AI chatbots, which allows only its own Meta AI to integrate deeply with WhatsApp, creates an unfair advantage and stifles competition within the rapidly growing artificial intelligence market. The DMA aims to ensure a level playing field for digital services, preventing dominant “gatekeepers” like Meta from abusing their market power.

The investigation could lead to significant fines for Meta if found in breach of EU regulations, and potentially force the company to alter its WhatsApp policy to allow greater interoperability for competing AI services. This probe signals the EU’s continued vigilance over how tech giants manage their platforms amidst the rise of new AI technologies.
