OpenAI recently learned a swift lesson in trademark law, discovering that the familiar term ‘cameo’ is a protected brand.

The AI research company had initially referred to its voice replication technology as “voice cameos,” intending to convey the idea of a brief, personalized voice appearance. However, the word “Cameo” is famously trademarked by the celebrity video messaging platform, Cameo (Cameo, Inc.), specifically within the entertainment, media, and digital services industries.

This intellectual property clash led OpenAI to quickly rename its feature, subsequently referring to it as “voice engine.” The incident serves as a sharp reminder for even large tech companies that commonly used words can be fiercely protected intellectual property when they form the core of an established business’s brand identity.
